The basic materials sector is an industrial complex consisting of companies working in the field of raw materials discovery, development, and processing. It includes mining companies, mineral refining, chemical products, and forest products.
Explanation of essential materials
Companies operating in the basic materials sector participate in the physical acquisition, development, and initial processing of many products commonly referred to as raw materials. Oil, gold, and stone are examples.
That means it takes millions of years to develop them, away from any company's long-term plans. Others are reusable but not available in unlimited quantities at any given time.
Basic materials or not?
Not all essential companies are included in this sector. For example, while a mineral mining company is a processor of essential materials, a jewelry company, even if it only works with extracted metals, is not. A retailer or wholesaler is a buyer of essential items.
Energy sources
Some energy sources, especially natural gas, are essential. Crude oil and coal qualify in their natural state, such as some refined products such as gasoline.
Duplicate versions of these products are included because demand for them is almost universal. It's necessary to run almost every industry.
Demand for essential materials
The basic materials sector is governed by the Law on Supply and Demand in the same manner as consumer goods. They're closely related. If demand for consumer goods falls, so does the demand for raw materials involved in their production.
Examples of essential materials companies
Three of the largest American companies are included in the basic materials sector, all of which operate in oil. These are Exxon Mobile Corp. and Chevron Corp. and the oil field service company Schlumberger Ltd.
Dupont de Nemours & Co. and Monsanto, both chemical companies, are included in this sector.
There are also two major building materials producers in the field, Vulcan Materials, a producer of crushed stone, gravel, and concrete, and Steel Dynamics, a manufacturer of finished steel products Over 300 common equity, index, and exchange funds (ETFs) focus on investments in the core sector.
Many of the investment funds in circulation include Vanguard's Vanguard Materials ETF, Blackrock's iShares Global Materials ETF, and the iShares US.
Common funds in the sector sometimes focus narrowly on one sector, such as Fidelity Smooth Chemicals and VanEck Ventures Gold Miners ETF.
